The Mysterious Lidérc of Hungarian Folklore
In the deep nights of old Hungary, when the fire in the hearth burned low and shadows crept across the walls, people whispered about the Lidérc.

The Lidérc is a shape-shifting creature of Hungarian mythology. In some tales, it hatches from a strange egg laid by a black hen and takes the form of a small fiery bird. In other stories, it appears as a ghostly lover or a shadow that presses down on its victim while they sleep.
It was said to bring both luck and terror. The Lidérc could shower its master with gold, filling their house with riches. But it could also be a tormentor, sitting heavy on the chest at night, stealing breath, peace, and dreams.
What makes the Lidérc so fascinating is its dual nature — part helper, part nightmare. Was it a bird of flame, a spirit of the night, or a living dream? Like many creatures in folklore, it carried both the hopes and the fears of the people who told its stories.
